« The question for the consumer is: “Did I get a good deal [i.e., the most for the money]?” The question of “Can
I actually use what I buy?” is never raised. The corporations know of the desire for the useless (a desire that can never be fulfilled), and comply by heaping on their products as much useless gadgetry as possible in order to seduce the bargain-hungry consumer. And so the cycle starts.»

THE BAGDAD BATTERY

Estimated to date from a period between some hundreds of years before Christ, up to some hundreds of years after Christ. The Baghdad battery is about 15 cm high with a lid of asphalt. An iron (oxidised) rod in the middle which is surrounded by a 9 cm long copper cylinder with a diameter of about 26 mm. When the vase is filled with one or another electrolyte, such as lemon juice or vinegar, then it is able to deliver an electrical voltage of approximately 1 volt.

PRISONERS' INVENTIONS

This project was a collaboration with Angelo, an incarcerated artist. He illustrated many incredible inventions made by prisoners to fill needs that the restrictive environment of the prison tries to supress. The inventions cover everything from homemade sex dolls, condoms, salt and peper shakers to chess sets. We collaborated on this project with Angelo for over two years. We had many additional collaborators who made a book, exhibition of re-created inventions and a prison cell possible. This page offers an overview of the project thus far.
E-waste

Every year, hundreds of thousands of old computers and mobile phones are dumped in landfills or burned in smelters. Thousands more are exported, often illegally, from the Europe, US, Japan and other industrialised countries, to Asia. There, workers at scrap yards, some of whom are children, are exposed to a cocktail of toxic chemicals and poisons.
The rate at which these mountains of obsolete electronic products are growing will reach crisis proportions unless electronics corporations that profit from making and selling these devices face up to their responsibilities. It is possible to make clean, durable products that can be upgraded, recycled, or disposed of safely and don't end up as hazardous waste in someone's backyard.

PENGUIN LIBERATION FRONT

PLF is a packaging project dedicated to distributing software that cannot be included in Linux distributions for various reasons, related to geographical variations in legislation regarding intellectual property, security and other issues:
* patentability of software, algorithms, formats and other abstract creation
* legal restrictions on freedom of speech or communication
* restrictions on the use of certain types of technical solution, such as cryptography
* legal restrictions on imports of software technology, requiring for example specific permissions
* etc…
A lot of excellent free software is concerned by such restriction somewhere in the world, thus preventing its inclusion into standard Linux distributions that, for economy and simplicity, are generally identical for all countries.
We refuse to resign ourselves to abandonning software that may be legally useful somewhere, and we have chosen to provide it with professionnal quality packaging, easily usable within the context of standard Linux distributions.
The PLF project is open to all distributions, provided we have volunteers to produce and maintain the packages.
"WE ARE ALL THE GRATEFUL DEAD"

Paul Krugman, 2008 Enomomic Nobel Prize
The predictions of ’90s technology gurus are coming true more slowly than enthusiasts expected — but the future they envisioned is still on the march.
In 1994, one of those gurus, Esther Dyson, made a striking prediction: that the ease with which digital content can be copied and disseminated would eventually force businesses to sell the results of creative activity cheaply, or even give it away. Whatever the product — software, books, music, movies — the cost of creation would have to be recouped indirectly: businesses would have to “distribute intellectual property free in order to sell services and relationships.”
For example, she described how some software companies gave their product away but earned fees for installation and servicing. But her most compelling illustration of how you can make money by giving stuff away was that of the Grateful Dead, who encouraged people to tape live performances because “enough of the people who copy and listen to Grateful Dead tapes end up paying for hats, T-shirts and performance tickets. In the new era, the ancillary market is the market.
[…]
Bit by bit, everything that can be digitized will be digitized, making intellectual property ever easier to copy and ever harder to sell for more than a nominal price. And we’ll have to find business and economic models that take this reality into account.
It won’t all happen immediately. But in the long run, we are all the Grateful Dead.

DIY 2.4GHz Spectrum Analyser
There many wireless devices available on the market now that broadcast in the 2.4GHz spectrum including Bluetooth, 802.11a/b ethernet (WiFi), Zigbee, wireless USB, cordless phones, wireless mice and keyboards and the humble microwave oven. Depending where you live in the world your government has allocated a roughly 80MHz block for transmitting all manner of data starting at 2.4GHz. It's getting a bit crowded in this band, especially if you live in a built up urban area. With this project you can monitor what's going on and figure out what channel to change your WiFi network to in order for it to keep working when your neighbor rudely sets up their wireless network on the same channel as you (that'd be channel 6, you lazy sod).

The I-R.A.S.C. is an infrared device, which protects against infrared surveillance cameras. It can be made by anybody; no special skills are required. The device radiates infrared light disrupting the reception of infrared surveillance cameras. A sphere of light covers the face of the person under surveillance and as the interaction is invisible to the human eye (at a frequency between 780nm and 1mm), the individual is unaware of what is going on i.e. they don't see the infrared rays emitted by either the surveillance camera or the I-R.A.S.C.
